Avast free antivirus not working12/31/2023 YAY! THANK YOU!! That was my first instinct a week ago, but I over complicated things and did everything BUT reinstall.Īs you can see above, I'm now covered for the next 368 days! A quick uninstall and reinstall FIXED it. Just shut Avast down when you uninstall and reboot to delete all registry files ,then reinstall from the link in my post. I said I installed a fresh version 12.x on ANOTHER machine and it only gave it a 30 day license!I reinstalled V18.8 and it gave me a yr on my XP MACHINE. I DO NOT WANT TO BE WITHOUT CURRENT VIRUS DEFINTIONS.ĭo I need to downgrade to version 12? Do I need to start looking for crack or pirated license key? What happened to the 1 year license? I'm concerned when I uninstall/reinstall Avast on the computer I'm having this issue with, at best it'll give me a 30 day trial-at worst, it'll pull up a counter from the registry and say my subscription remains expired. After the installation, it says I only have 30 days before the license will expire. It now reports I have only 3 days left.Īs an experiment, I pulled out an old netbook with Windows XP I tried installing Avast Free 18 on it. When I hit 'select' to renew Avast Free Antivirus (current protection) it comes up saying it went through, but the program itself is saying otherwise. I'm posting screen-shots above to make it clear. I'm using Avast Free version 18, and the pop-up message is clearly about my subscription license expiring (NOT a program update). and since it's online, I want it to remain protected. I'm just concerned in 7 days it may stop.Īnyone else out there know what the story is? Will it continue to get daily definition updates? Is there an activation code or license file to force it to give me another 365 days (or longer)? And yes, I know how incredibly outdated the OS is and a security risk itself, I but I keep it around for some legacy hardware and software. I tried manually inserting the activation code (it's displayed by the program when poking around), but I get the error message "cannot insert license".Īvast claims despite no longer updating the program for Windows XP ( is the final version) it SHOULD still receive definition updates. When I renew it, I get a "thank you for activating" screen, but Avast is still saying my license is about to expire. This year, however, it doesn't want to work, and I have only 7 days left until it expires! Before this, I found I could go into the Avast program from the taskbar shortcut button, Click "modify" and unclick all of its features and then click "change" to disable most of it and also in modify click disable for all of its 6 screens (Tools it uses to operate). One of my older machines is still running Windows XP/SP3 (with dual boot for Win 7) and has had Avast Free Antivirus installed for years.Īnd like clockwork, every year I get a pop-up asking to renew the free license. I am just glad it is now gone and I hope this helps anyone who feels frustrated and stuck by the Avast Program. I restarted my computer in normal mode and typed "Avast" in on the search programs and it was all gone at last!!!! This Avast program frequently got caught doing sneaky stuff on my system ( by Advanced System Care and by my new Eset Smart Security software) Eset was denied access to the Avast program but was able to warn me that Avast was doing risky things on my system. I then deleted all shortcuts and deleted the items from the recycle bin. (note: I was in my administrator account in safe mode). I found that in SAFE mode (PressF8 at startup) I could go to c:\program files\ Avast and uninstall it without the "need permission" issue.
